AHA UPDATE 2025 – ADULT BASIC LIFE SUPPORT

Here are the 2025 AHA updates on adult BLS

  1. Airway management in trauma – patients with head and neck trauma if airway cannot be opened with only jaw thrust and airway adjunct insertion, head tilt and chin lift can be done by trained rescuers.

2. Ventilation

  • While ventilating a patient in cardiac arrest, enough tidal volume should be delivered for visible chest rise.
  • Avoid hypoventilation and hyperventilation

3. Compression to ventilation ratio – CPR ratio of 30 compressions to 2 breaths are advised before placement of advanced airway

4. Defibrillation pads – Adjust the bra instead of removing it while attaching defibrillator pads for adult women in cardiac arrest

5. CPR for adulty with obesity – same technique of CPR should be followed for obese patients

6. Alternative technique for CPR

  • Mechanical CPR devices are not routinely advised
  • Mechanical CPR devices can be used if delivering high quality manual compressions are challenging or dangerous for health care workers provided there will be minimal interruptions in CPR during deployment or removal of the device

7. Foreign body airway obstruction– for severe FBAO – repeated cycles of 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts are recommended
